If you’ve been following the lead up to the release of Metric‘s new album Synthetica, you’ll have noticed that the band has taken their usual care to give fans lots of extras to go along with the music.

“If you’ve seen anything on the internet of the ‘reflection’ pieces, you might notice these [security cameras] everywhere,” guitarist Jimmy Shaw points out to AUX during a visit to the band’s Giant Studio this week. “We had these installed in the beginning of the making of Synthetica. We recorded the entire thing. They were movement sensitive, or at least we thought they were, then we found out that they recorded for a year straight.”

The band installed the cameras, which are in every room of the studio, with the intention of creating visual representations of Synthetica‘s intention and themes. “There was always kind of an idea what they were for,” says Shaw. “They look grainy, they’re security cameras. And they don’t record audio, so they’re not actually recording what was going on, it was just some sort of artistic visual representation of what happened…” and singer Emily Haines finishes his sentence, “the process.”

“It will all be revealed later,” Haines says of uncovering the larger creative vision. “Once the record comes out, you’ll make the connection to the reflections. We put a lot of love into making special things for people to discover. It’s cool.”

Stay tuned for a special AUX feature with Metric next month. Synthetica is out June 12, but you can watch one of the Reflections below, as well as more at the band’s website.
