Fast Romantics are still a while away from releasing their third album Afterlife Blues—they’re working on it now, once again with producer Howard Redekopp (Mother Mother, New Pornographers, Said The Whale), and it won’t be out until Valentine’s Day of 2013. But the band has decided to lessen the wait by releasing songs, videos, holding special events, and more, starting now, and leading up to its release.

First up is “Funeral Song,” and the band’s Matthew Angus tells AUX that it represents the first of a new, more visceral approach for the band. “It’s the first time we’ve felt like we’ve just written songs direct from our guts, without putting it through a filter of ‘what kind of song should this be?’ or ‘gosh I hope people will like this,'” he says.

More new songs will be debuted soon—the band has two shows at NXNE in Toronto next month, at which they’ll distribute download cards for “Funeral Song,” plus two other new tracks.

Check out the live dates and the new single below.

Thursday, June 14 @ 12:00 a.m. – El Mocambo (Upstairs)
Saturday, June 16 @ 2 a.m. – Horseshoe Tavern
