While on an Australian morning show, One Direction’s Niall Horan tried a piece of Vegemite covered toast. Horan, who you might remember has to hire extra security because he’s terrified of pigeons, wasn’t impressed. He took one, quick bite, and what followed was a series of faces that even his most desperate fans would scoff at. Eventually, he spit it out.

But obviously that’s not the story here. What we’re talking about is much, much weirder. Spin points out that after the show, the people behind Sunrise put the half-eaten piece of toast on eBay, and while you see the auction was taken down early over speculation that the network sold the toast privately. Proceeds, by the way, were set to benefit YoungCare, an Australian charity which looks after young people in need of full time care.

The thing is, even though the auction, now dead, sits at $0.99AU, reports suggest that the half-eaten, presumably stale piece of bread had reportedly garnered over 100 bids. Crazier still, was reporting that bidding had hit as high as $99,000. For a piece of toast that, as the auction pointed out, you should probably, definitely not try to eat.

“The item is perishable and although we will package it so that tampering is evident, we do not advise that it is consumed. We will not be including the mouthful that Niall spat out – because that’s just gross.”

And you guys thought buying John Lennon’s tooth for $32,000 was weird.
