Brit boyband One Direction hit the Saturday Night Live stage this weekend, hoping to prove that they're more than just a handsome, floppy-haired flavour of the week. It's safe to assume that #Directioners accross the globe were begging their parents to let them stay up and watch the five strapping young gents bust out their hits "What Makes You Beautiful" and "One Thing" on the SNL stage, which is notoriously bad for performing on. Did One Direction show that they're the real deal?

It’s safe to assume that #Directioners accross the globe were begging their parents to let them stay up and watch the five strapping young gents bust out their hits “What Makes You Beautiful” and “One Thing” on the SNL stage, which is notoriously bad for performing on. Did One Direction show that they’re the real deal?

“What Makes You Beautiful”

“One Thing”

Backed by a live band, One Direction actually seemed to be singing their own verses competently, with a little help from a vocal track on the big choruses. A bumblingly British pre-teen Hugh Grant-esque charm seems to radiate from these teenagers, so their appeal isn’t terribly confusing to me (I love Notting Hill). All in all, these are two pretty solid performances from 1D.

The boys also donned fake moustaches, and tried their luck at comedy in the recurring SNL sketch “The Manual Ortiz Show” featuring Fred Armisen, Kristen Wiig, and Bill Hader.

One Direction’s inclusion on the show is one of several interesting music booking decisions made in 2012, with emerging acts like Lana Del Rey, Karmin, and Sleigh Bells all performing. Next week, Gotye will take the stage. Whoever is booking SNL’s musical acts these days seems to be accommodating very current musical acts, and it’s difficult to say whether this makes the show cutting-edge, or desperate for relevance.
