The CBC launched their new digital music service just two months ago to both acclaim and criticism, and today, the Globe and Mail is reporting that a Canadian media company coalition has come together to shut it down, claiming the free service threatens their own profits.

Quebecor, Stingray Digital, Cogeco Cable, the Jim Pattison Group, and Golden West Radio are prepared to file a formal complaint with the CRTC. Rogers and Corus are expected to join as well.

“There is a cost to everything, yet CBC does not seem to think that is true,” Stingray CEO Eric Boyko said.

The private companies must pay royalties—and charge customers to offset them—that the CBC, as a non-profit entity, is exempt from. The CBC has yet to comment. [via The Globe and Mail]
