Tomorrow marks the traditionally quiet Wednesday launch of this year’s Canadian Music Week, and though we’ll have more on the music portion starting tomorrow, we thought we’d highlight some of the standout films that will be playing through the next five days for the film portion of the festival. Here are five certainly worth checking out. Full schedule and ticket details can be found at the CMW Film Festival website.

Under African Skies
Director: Joe Berlinger
(Canadian Premiere)
25 years after the release of Paul Simon’s groundbreaking classic Graceland, he travels back to South Africa where much of the album was made to reunite with many of the musicians, revisit the political implications his work had, and perform a 25th anniversary concert. Not only a more in-depth Behind the Music kind of story, but a good primer for when Simon tours Graceland later this year.

Girl Walk // All Day
Director: Jacob Krupnick
(Canadian Premiere)
So this one’s not actually about Girl Talk, but rather a feature-length music video/dance opera set to his All Day album. Also billed as an “insanely fun love letter to New York,” the film was shot entirely in public spaces and was fully crowd funded through Kickstarter.

No Room For Rock Stars: The Vans Warped Tour Documentary
Director: Parris Patton
Warped Tour is likely a different beast now than the one you soiled your Dickies at as a young’n, but there’s no doubt that a feature-length look behind the scenes of the mega-successful tour will be worth watching. Stick around for a Q&A with Van’s Warped Tour founder, Kevin Lyman.

Hit So Hard
Director: P. David Ebersole
(Canadian Premiere)
AKA that movie that got surviving original Hole members to reunite for the premiere. Hit So Hard takes a look at ex-drummer Patty Schemel’s troubled life, including the drug abuse through the band’s early ’90s heyday that led to her replacement in Hole before the release of Celebrity Skin.

Last Days Here
Director: Don Argott and Demian Fenton
(Toronto Premiere)
A film about a megafan saving a fledgling rock star from the brink? Always. This one’s a sad look at Pentagram’s Bobby Liebling wasting away in self-imposed exile in his parents’ basement, being offered a way out.

Honourable Mention:

Last Music Man (short)
Director: David Kalinauskas
(Canadian Premiere)
This one’s a short and will be screened before Kevin, so if you feel like sneaking in and out (though both are worth checking out), there you go. This one’s a look at Toronto music promoter/legend Dan Burke. Maybe follow him on Twitter (as of today!) as prep? Or read this Taddle Creek feature? Can’t wait for this one.
