In one of the slew of late-90s Canrock bands (Big Wreck aren’t technically Canadian but Ian Thornley’s a Torontonian, so we claim ’em) that have reunited recently, Big Wreck sort of flew under the radar when frontman Ian Thornley and guitarist Brian Doherty got back together to tour some Big Wreck and Thornley songs in 2010. Now the group is back with a new album, Albatross, set to be released on March 6.

“I went for all the good stuff that’s missing on rock records these days,” Thornley said, totally sincerely, of the new album in a statement. “I wanted to avoid falling into the formulaic cookie-cutter trap. That’s not going to interest me, so how can it interest the listener? I have to go with my gut, which means longer songs, intros, bridges and guitar solos which explore strange territories, more room for breathing and a different dynamic range or sonic palette altogether.”
