Talk about burying the lead. While reports circulate that the Mars Volta’s sixth album is just about done, At the Drive-In has quietly announced that they’ll finally reunite. Sort of.

“¡ ATTENTION ! To whom it may concern: AT THE DRIVE-IN will be breaking their 11 year silence THIS STATION IS …NOW…OPERATIONAL,” tweeted the band earlier today. The same message later appeared on the group’s newly relaunched official website. And that’s really all we know at this point. Thing is, it’s enough.

The announcement—if you can call it that—comes just as the Mars Volta readies their sixth album. NME reported today that the band is just about done working on the follow-up to 2009’s Octahedron after a post on the Official Playstation Blog revelead that a new new Mars Volta song would be on the soundtrack to MLB 12 The Show.

“New Volta almost done. Vocals done. Just trying to rebutcher it and finish guitar. In studio until this week then on to Mexico to add more quantum entanglement to it. The sonogram of the little beast is looking very good,” says frontman Cedric Bixler-Zavala.

As to why these two stories would come out on the same day, it’s important to remember one thing: Sparta. At the Drive-In was more than just Omar and Cedric, and sure, this could be speculation, but it’s easy to forget that the band didn’t exactly split on the best of circumstances.

We’ll follow this story as it develops. At the Drive-In’s last album, Relationship of Command, came out way back in 2000.
