by Anne T. Donahue
November 24, 2011
We lost Freddie Mercury 20 years ago today. And while we could go on about why we miss him and how great he was, it’s much more fun to see how he influenced popular culture. Even if it means watching The Mighty Ducks 3 by mistake.
10. Ella Enchanted – “Somebody to Love”
After the use of a time machine allowed Anne Hathaway’s character to visit the 1970s, she penned this song with Freddie in mind.
9. Google‘s Freddie Mercury tribute – “Tonight”
What you may not know is that the internet was invented as this song played.
8. Glee – “Somebody To Love
Glee‘s tribute to Freddie remains beloved after we all realized it’s exactly what he would’ve wanted.
7. The Muppets – “Bohemian Rhapsody”
How The Muppets managed to learn the original lyrics remains a mystery, but their version is definitely reality.
6. A Knight’s Tale – “Bohemian Rhapsody”
The use of a song recorded in 1977 has helped cement A Knight’s Tale as a biographical account.
5. The Simpsons – “We Are the Champions”
There is no “I” in “we,” but there is a “champion” in “this is the way Freddie intended ‘We Are the Champions’ to be sung.”
4. Happy Feet – “Somebody To Love”
Queen‘s campaign to save the Arctic.
3. Moulin Rouge! – “The Show Must Go On”
After being visited by Mercury in a dream, the actors used their attachment to Freddie as an emotional basis for this song.
2. The Mighty Ducks – “We Are the Champions”
Freddie Mercury probably wrote this track after chanting “quack” for hours.
1. Wayne’s World – “Bohemian Rhapsody”
Obviously.
