Hold Steady frontman Craig Finn announced he was working on a solo album with producer Mike McCarthy back in July; at the time he noted that it was being done in Austin, TX, and with the new information about the album, titled Clear Heart Full Eyes, we can see why that might have been important.

“It’s a juxtaposed reference to Friday Night Lights, a TV show that excited and moved me and also happened in Texas,” Finn said in a statement. “Further, ‘Clear Heart’ signifies honesty and transparency, and ‘Full Eyes’ suggests experience. Thus, it’s about being optimistic and open without succumbing to the weariness or doubt that comes with age and experience. To me, that is what it’s all about.”

Clear Heart Full Eyes is, of course, a reference to the series’ Coach Taylor’s trademark motivational phrase “Clear eyes, full hearts, can’t lose.” The record will be out January 24th via Vagrant Records. It sounds basically perfect.
