It’s been a few months since R.E.M. officially called it quits, but in an interview with Rolling Stone, former frontman Michael Stipe confirmed the inevitable: that we won’t be hearing any solo material from him any time soon.

“It’s unfathomable to me right now,” said Stipe. “What would it sound like? Watered-down R.E.M.?”

Though for some that might be good enough, we’re glad—in a bittersweet sort of way—that Stipe’s not in a rush to capitalize on the break-up. But, in reading the quote, there’s one thing to focus in on: “right now.”

So, while you shouldn’t expect a solo album any time in the near future, don’t rule it out.
