Kanye West made headlines he claims he didn’t want to make as he visited the Occupy Wall Street protests in New York City yesterday. Or rather, Russel Simmons claims he didn’t want to make headlines, as Simmons speaks for Kanye in a short interview clip that you can watch above.

“Kanye’s been a big supporter, spiritually for this movement. He’s just here to stand with the people. He doesn’t want to make a statement, didn’t want to do any media at all, actually. He’s here, and I guess there’s no way around it,” Simmons said.

While the big names might so well to attract more attention to the protests, Kanye, he who just released an album about all of his wealth and spoils, seems an odd fit to do so. Especially with the opulence of a designer plaid shirt and a gold-plated grill in his face and draped around his neck. Bold move.

Unlike previous musical guests at the site, Kanye did not perform. In fact, he did not say a word. [via Prefix]
