AUX’s BEST BETS:
Friday, October 21

God dang, Thursday. You rained a freaking lot. The sun’s out today, though, and what we’re making up for in stable weather, we’re losing in dicey navigation tonight. It’s Friday. And things get real crazy on Fridays at the Halifax Pop Explosion. Here are a few suggestions if you needed some help rounding out your schedule (WHY AREN’T YOU DOING THIS FOR US ALL WE DO IS GIVE):

Chixdiggit
This one’s for the post-20s, pre-30s; those who may remember seeing Chixdiggit at a venue not unlike this one a long time ago; the ones who still listen to pop-punk but don’t necessarily live it anymore. And this one’s for all of the rest of you, too, because Chixdiggit are a feisty little Canadian treasure full of power chords and catchy choruses and life.
(Reflections, 11 p.m.)

Southern Shores
Southern Shores is our Halifax pick for the night; an electro duo creating a wash of beat-iful, bubbly pop rich with atmosphere and a warm glow of optimism. A couple of tracks posted to Soundcloud got this duo (rounded out with some additional musicians for the show) attention from major centres like New York and Pitchfork. Plus you get the added bonus of being able to see the excellent Kidstreet, from Kitchener, On, and Twin Shadow, if you stick around. One of the strongest bills of a night. Take a guitar break.
(The Palace, 9 p.m.)

Library Voices
Library Voices have had their fair share of shit luck as a band, but if you go see them tonight you’ll see why they’re able to shake it off and keep going. Vibrant, tight-knit, and occasionally explosive, the Regina seven-piece have been honing not only their power of positive thinking, but the live show that feeds so beautifully off of it. Sometimes amidst all the lo-fi, you just want to see some rich and storied blissful pop-rock. I mean, I know I do.
(The Seahorse Tavern, 12:30 a.m.)

RatTail
RatTail sound classic in their brooding post-punk melodies and modern in their aesthetics. Soulful singer Jasmyn Burke stands out with a voice capable of the sickest yelps or the most soothing do-do-doos. The Toronto three-piece are full of big hooks and strange turns and are releasing a new album very soon; go get a taste if you haven’t already.
(Tribeca, 7 p.m.)
