Having spent the last decade going through the major label ringer with his bands Under the Influence of Giants (signed to Island Records) and Hometown Hero (signed to Maverick Records), AWOLNATION braintrust Aaron Bruno isn’t interested in pulling punches when it comes to the way he’s been treated in the past. Thanks in part to the massive radio success of the single “Sail,” culled from the band’s Red Bull Records-released full-length, Megalithic Symphony, Bruno’s latest project is poised to become his most successful. It’s a surprise, given that his goal this time out seems to have been to just be able to release music at all.

“I went into this with no expectations whatsoever,” he says. “I hope for the best, obviously, but I’ve been in other bands before where people around me or the powers at be were saying, ‘This is going to be huge, this is a hit song,’ and nothing happened. So this time, I expected nothing. I wanted to write a record people would like, would want to sing along to and crowd surf and stage dive.” It doesn’t take long for Bruno to cut to the heart of the matter.

“My true goal was to release a record at all. There were plenty of songs I had written that had legal ties to other labels, and you get dropped from that label and you’re not allowed to write with the people you were in a band with for legal reasons,” he explains. “It’s a corrupt way of doing business, and it’s raping the artist. I’ve been a part of that so many times, so this time around I was happy to have a chance to have these songs I believe in to release the way I want.”
