Let’s be honest. No one was surprised when the Flaming Lips announced they were going to record a six-hour song. Same as we’re not surprised to learn that it’s meant to be accompanied by a strobe light toy, or that frontman Wayne Coyne says it sounds like the Velvet Underground meets Super Mario Brothers. Because of course.

In a new interview with Rolling Stone, Coyne admits that the whole thing is bonkers. “I’ve realized, it’s insane. When we started doing it, it didn’t seem like it was that big of a deal. So we were like, ‘Yeah, we’ll do a song that is six hours long—it will be fun. But then you get in to it and your like ‘Fuck, what the fuck were we thinking?'”

Coyne also admits that the strobe light toy component was mostly to encourage kids to take drugs, sort of. “That’s kind of our intention, so that people buy it at like a festival, and then go back to their parents’ and take some acid and play with it all night.”

Or for at least six hours, I guess. Read the full interview here.
