It might be okay for The Strokes (see opening bars of “Last Night”), but not so for newly announced presidential candidate Michele Bachmann, a Minnesota congresswoman and Tea Party favorite.

According to NBC’s Kelly O’Donnell, Tom Petty’s camp are issuing a cease and desist letter after Bachmann used the song “American Girl” following her speech in Iowa yesterday officially announcing her candidacy for president of the United States in 2012.

This isn’t the first time Petty has had to disallow one of his songs to be used for political rallies as his track “I Won’t Back Down” was played before and after then-Governor George W. Bush’s speeches while he was running for president. Hopefully the trend of “play Tom Petty and you’ll win” doesn’t continue. [Raw Story]
