The western Los Angeles city of Santa Monica was named after Saint Monica (natch), a Christian Saint and mother to Augustine of Hippo, was the home of that awkward scene in Rocky III where Balboa and Apollo jump around and hug each other in the ocean, and is also the place where Scottish band Glasvegas holed up for four months demoing their latest album Euphoric Heartbreak (EUPHORIC /// HEARTBREAK \\\).

Since its release in early April, the quartet have been touring extensively and are now at the mid-point of their North American jaunt, but still often recollect the days in California recording their sophomore effort.

“We’d planned on going there just to do the demos. We kind of set up base for four months and recorded 15 to 20 songs,” guitarist Rab Allan tells AUX. “I think musically it had an influence. When we looked out the window everyday there was a beach with people surfing and girls in bikinis. That was a little bit different than Glasgow and looking out your window and there’s people begging for money.”

“It’s the best piece of work we’ve made and I’m more happy with this one than I was the first one,” he continues. “I think it’s a better album and it has better songs. It’s probably more the way we wanted to be in the first place.”

Despite just having finished a new album they obviously spent quite a bit of time on (their self-titled debut was released in 2008), the guitarist reveals his bandmate and cousin, lead vocalist James Allan, has been writing constantly for the band’s next LP.

“James is in the bus right now writing the album,” he says. “We set up a studio in the back of the bus and he’s just demoing the album because he wants to get it out straight away. He’s probably got about half the album done in the past three or four weeks.”

There’s been no talk of where the Glasgow band will venture to demo songs next, but they did give us their top five things to do in Santa Monica should any other band be so inclined to visit.

Glasvegas’ Top 5 things to do in Santa Monica.

5. There’s a diner called Swingers. You need to go there for breakfast, it’s awesome.

4. You need to go for a run along the beach in the morning.

3. You have to stay up all night and then watch everyone jogging at five in the morning. I was drunk and was like ‘what are you doing?! Go home, get a beer, enjoy yourself. Don’t jog you’ll die anyway. You’ll maybe get an extra six months.’

2. Watch the women in bikinis running.

1. Get some really good ecstasy or MDMA, go on the roof of your house when the sun is just about to set, on your own, and jump about like a nutcase. It’s quite liberating.
