It’s been a few long years since MySpace was the ‘in’ social network. Remember how awesome it was to have songs streaming on your profile? Remember the glory you’d feel when that track once featured on your profile went on to become a hit? Remember all the social cred you’d get?

Now Facebook is cashing in on the social music business after specializing in retailers, news and sports, reportedly teaming up with big music services like Spotify to share all the ways users listen to music online. The service is expected to be announced at an f8 developers conference in August.

What else can we expect from Facebook Music? According to GigaOm, who canvassed the music services that are in talks with Facebook, there’s a few features to look forward to, including:

Listening History: Just like Last.fm, Facebook Music will track the songs you’ve listened to, top tracks and play counts in their Music Dashboard service.

Activity Feed: Everything you and your friends have listened to or liked will show up in an activity feed, as well as in a “Happening Now” ticker that shows what your friends are listening to at the moment.

Persistent Play Button: No matter what platform someone uses to listen to music, Zuckerberg’s aim is to have them all integrated for use on Facebook without the song stopping, like the music service Rdio.

As the Huffington Post comments, the new service “has the potential to turn Facebook music into a big Turntable.fm-style listening party. If your friend is listening to My Morning Jacket on Pandora, you could join them, or if you’re both Spotify subscribers, you’d be able to listen to the same playlists at the same time.”
