When the Get Up Kids reformed to record and release their most recent album There Are Rules last year, they decided early on that they’d release it independently as opposed to going with a label. Frontman Matt Pryor is about to record his second solo album (the first was 2008’s Confidence Man, out on Vagrant Records), and he’s decided to take the same route—but he’s going to need a little help from his fans.

Pryor is looking for financial support for the project through Kickstarter, the online pledge system used for funding various projects. The aim is to record and release everything through the month of May, and thus, the album will be called May Day. There are various incentives for differing levels of donations, including an additional bonus album and limited edition silkscreened posters and album artwork. There will also be bonuses along the way for contributors. Says Pryor:

“I’d like you to be involved in the process of making this record, and I’ll keep you in-the-loop with everything as we are recording and releasing ‘May Day’. If you contribute you’ll be part of a special club, who get to hear the songs as they are written and have a say in the final artwork. You can own a piece of it from an exclusive poster to the test pressings to the guitars that I play on the album. I’ll even come sing in your bedroom!”

The private anywhere-in-the-world show comes at a price of only $5000, guys. What a steal!

As of now, May Day has 49 backers to a total of almost half of his $10,000 goal. Visit Pryor’s Kickstarter page to see how to donate. You can watch a promotional video (filmed by his kids, it seems) for the album/project below.
