Tom Hanks hired to produce Green Day 'American Idiot' film

Last year there was rumblings that actor/producer/director Tom Hanks was in talks with the folks behind the Green Day musical American Idiot to turn it into a feature film. We can now safely say the Forrest Gump, Castaway, Saving Private Ryan star has officially been hired to produce the movie.
Reuters is reporting Universal put an offer forward and it has been accepted by Hanks. Online reports have also confirmed director Michael Mayer, who directed the musical, will once again be in the chair for the film.
Apparently the producers are now seeking screenwriter Dustin Lance Black (Milk, Big Love) to pen the movie’s script.
