John Lennon’s original lyric sheet for “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds” will sell for around $200,000 at an auction next month in Beverly Hills, according to Auction house Profiles in History. The sheet has the opening lyrics for the famous song and a rough sketch of four people in a room with windows draped in curtains.

When it was recorded and released on the Beatles’ 1967 album Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band, it was thought the lyrics were about the band’s fascination with the drug LSD. Lennon always claimed it was about his son Julian who drew a picture of his classmate Lucy.

Years later a British woman named Lucy Vodden came forward and said the song was in fact written about her. The debate still lingers with some believing the track’s obscure lyrics and melody were the result of the band’s experimentation with the drug.

The auction will take place May 14 and 15 at the Saban Theater in California. [Reuters]
