In what can only be described as another affirmation of their global domination, the Flaming Lips will be collaborating with director Des McAnuff (co-creator of the stage version of Tommy) to launch a stage musical based around their 2002 album, Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots.

In an interview with Billboard, frontman Wayne Coyne referred to the production as a “big deal” and described it as “hokey and wonderful and poignant and powerful,” going on to explain that after 14 record releases, the band were jonesing to do something “different.”

The singer also maintained that show is a “perfect combination of [his] fantastical robot-world vision and [McAnuff’s] little, internal, humanistic version of what music is,” and revealed that the production will feature about thirty songs, most of which will be Flaming Lips originals.

While no opening date has been revealed, Coyne did confirm that the musical is currently in “the early stages of production.” [via The Guardian]
