Fans were caught off guard when it was announced over the weekend that Protest the Hero’s upcoming album would be titled Scurrilous. They were even more confused when the album’s cover hit the internet earlier today. Featuring an amphibious Joanna Newsom lookalike eating a spider in a mystical forest where turkeys have iguana tails, the album’s cover is more than a little left-of-centre for a metal band.

If you’re still looking for an explanation behind both the title and the cover, we’ve learned that the cover is actually a 60-year-old painting by bassist Arif Mirabdolbaghi’s grandfather Jafar Petgar. The painting’s title? Scurrilous.

Scurrilous is slated for release on March 22nd via Vagrant Records.
