Thirty years ago today, John Lennon was shot outside his apartment in New York City by Mark David Chapman and was pronounced dead when he arrived in the hospital a short time later. Three days prior to his death, Lennon gave Rolling Stone what would be his final interview for a planned cover story.

According to the magazine, Jonathan Cott spoke with Lennon for several hours. Audio clips of that interview have surfaced and are available to listen to here. Lennon speaks out to his critics saying, “I’m not claiming divinity. I’ve never claimed purity of soul. I’ve never claimed to have the answer to the light…I only put out songs and answer questions as honestly as I can. I can’t do any more I can’t do any less.”
