Jeffrey Atkins, better known as his rapper name Ja Rule, was sentenced to two years in prison this morning after pleading guilty to driving with a loaded gun after a Lil Wayne concert in 2007.

Atkins had a loaded .40-caliber Taurus pistol with him inside his car as he and two others left the Bacon Theatre in New York City. Wayne was also arrested that night for gun possession and ended up serving a year at Rikers Island prison.

Ja Rule’s last album R.U.L.E was released in 2004 and debuted at #7 on the Billboard 200. A new album entitled Rule York, his seventh, is expected to come out sometime next year. He’s due back in court on February 9 to schedule a sentencing date. [NYDailyNews]

In case something really bad happens over the next two years, MTV might not be able to have access to Ja’s thoughts as easily as Dave Chappelle explained a few years back.
