David Draiman lead vocalist of Chicago’s Disturbed is known for his distinct vocals and his lyrical prowess—what is little known about Draiman is he is well educated and has completed a triple major in business administration, philosophy, and political science during his university career. Usually a metal-head’s intellectual aptitude is not held in the highest regards by outsiders; an assumption that Draiman is quick to dismiss.

“I never have the intention of going over anyone’s head nor do I think that any of our subject matter does that because to do that would be to underestimate our fan base,” Draiman stated when asked about the intellectual nature of his lyrical content, “I think that a lot of people who really invest themselves in hard rock and metal are much deeper than you might imagine. You shouldn’t second guess them because they’re worthy of it and they deserve to be challenged. They deserve to be spoken to in an honest and direct way, not talking down to them, not preaching about anything but simply speaking from your heart; I think that’s what we owe to them.”

Watch Disturbed, along with interviews with Orphaned Land, Katatonia, and King Cobra tonight on a new episode of HARD, 10 pm only on AUX.
