This past weekend Matador Records celebrated its 21st year where artists currently under the renowned label gave their thanks by playing shows at a party in Las Vegas. One of those performers was Chan Marshall, aka Cat Power, who in an interview spoke about her forthcoming record, her first since 2008’s Dark End of the Street EP.

“I’m working on a new album and I’m trying to play all the instruments myself,” Marshall told Rolling Stone. “I think I was inspired by being disappointed in myself that I’d just been holding the microphone. I wanted to prove to myself that I could try to create a relationship with it again. It’s a need and it just hasn’t been around.”

Since 1996’s What Would the Community Think, Marshall’s third record, she has released all of her albums under Matador and said the label always “loved me unconditionally.”
