According to the New York Times Al Pacino will play legendary record producer Phil Spector, who is currently incarcerated for shooting actress Lana Clarkson in 2003, in a new as-yet-untitled HBO film.

Despite the production still being in its early stages, David Mamet has already been assigned to write and direct the film while Oscar-winner Barry Levinson (Rain Man) will act as executive producer.

Spector is widely known for creating the “wall of sound” in the ’60s and producing the Ronettes’ “Be My Baby,” the Righteous Brothers’ “You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling” and mixing the tapes for the final Beatles album Let It Be. He was convicted last year of second-degree murder and is serving a sentence of 19 years to life.

An agent at International Creative Management representing Pacino said “He just saw a very interesting character to play, and he likes the sensibility of David and Barry.”
