As part of AUX’s launch in western Canada (on Shaw 138, which just got extended to Sept 30th!) we’ve asked a few of our favourite artists to share their most memorable hometown music memories. Said The Whale’s Tyler Bancroft shares his from Vancouver.

Choosing my most memorable music experience in my hometown of Vancouver is about as easy as picking my favorite Thai dish – it’s almost impossible, because they’re all awesome.  But, for the purpose of this feature, I’ll single out one in particular.

During the Vancouver 2010 Olympics we had the pleasure of playing an outdoor set in the middle of Robson Square to a packed crowd of tourists, passerby, fans and friends.  The stage was set up right in front of the recently resurrected outdoor ice rink, which was a major bonus, since I’ve had fantasies of playing a set at an ice rink for as long as I can remember.  During a break between songs, I turned around to admire the people skating, and confessed to the crowd that my lifelong dream would be fulfilled if there happened to be any young couples on a first date that wouldn’t mind having their first kiss while we played.  Lo and behold, a lovely young girl with her handsome date skated up to the stage and obliged a la “A Walk To Remember” in front of the 2000 or so onlookers.  They kissed and skated away pretty quickly after everyone started cheering loudly.
A couple months later we were playing a show in London, Ontario, and we met someone who said he was best friends with that very lovely young girl, and that her and her handsome date were still together!!  How awesome is that?
I’ll put it out there right now, we’ll play their wedding for free.
