Bethany Cosentino from Best Coast, a band who are touring in support of their debut LP Crazy For You, has created a mixtape for UK publication The Independent. Besides choosing the tracks the cat-loving singer also scribbled a few lines about why the songs appear, something music geeks adore when receiving a mixtape. From Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons, to The Queers to the best track on Beach House’s latest album Teen Dream, this woman knows how to make a memorable mix. Listen to it below.

Best Coast Mixtape For The Independent by Brilliantlydifferent on Mixcloud

1. Pavement- Kennel District
This is one of my favourite Pavement songs, and I’m super stoked because we are playing the same day as them at Pitchfork festival next week. I keep saying that if I hear them play this song I’ll probably cry,  because it reminds me of being a teenager.

2. Patience & Prudence- Whisper Whisper
I love the guitar in the intro of this song, and i just think basically every patience & prudence song rules, but this one is super good and the melody rules.

3.  Steely Dan- Do It Again
I basically know every lyric to every steely dan song because my parent’s listened to them non-stop when I was growing up–this song rules, and “Can’t buy a thrill” is probably still one of the best records I have ever heard.

4.  Billy Joel- Say Goodbye To Hollywood
I love that this song has the same intro drum beat as the ronettes “Be my baby”. I think this is one of the Billy Joel’s best songs. My mom took me to see Billy Joel like 2 summers ago, before I moved to new york, and it was one of the coolest things ever–it was just a bunch of really drunk 40 year old women, and my mom and I singing along to every song.

5.  The Queers- I Gotta Girlfriend
The Queers were one of my favourite bands in high school, just super straight forward, fun pop-punk from the Lookout! records era. I seriously still listen to this record all the time, it’s classic pop punk, man.

6. Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons- Bye Bye Baby (Baby Goodbye)
I listened to this record a lot when we were on tour in Europe, and I would play this song over and over because the harmonies are seriously some of the best ever–but frankie valli is like the master of every amazing harmony ever–not to mention, some of the best pop songs ever written. I just think this song is so classic, and I could listen to it over and over and never get sick of it.

7. Josie Cotton- Johnny, Are You Queer?
This song is from one of my favorite movies ever “Valley Girl”. I just think this song rules, and it’s super simple and poppy–and thats the kind of shit I am into!!

8. Weezer- Why Bother?
One of my favourite jams ever. We listen to a lot of weezer on tour.  It’s just simple, and fun, and I think it reminds everyone of being young.

9. Beach House- Walk in the Park
Beach House has quickly become one of my favourite bands to come out in the last few years. I just think they write some of the best songs out there right now, and Victoria’s voice is one of the most beautiful things I have ever heard–I listened to this record a lot on tour in Europe too, and I think this is definitely my favourite song off the album, though every song on there rules.

10. Fleetwood Mac- That’s Alright
Love, love love, this song–Stevie’s voice is so good on this track, and I love how country sounding this song is–plus the lyrics rule.

11. Bread- Baby I’m-a Want You
Bread rules, man. smooth 70s jams are where it’s at. This song is really beautiful, and I think the lyrics are super cheesy and sweet, and I’m into cheesy, sweet shit, haha.

12. Avi Buffalo- One Last
I’m super into this album right now, I think these kids are amazing. Avi and Rebecas’ voices go so perfectly together.

13. Aretha Franklin- Call Me
This is one of the most beautiful songs ever, and it reminds me a lot of my friend Alex, because we used to listen to it a lot in my room in Brooklyn and sing it to each other. I heard it in a bookstore the other day, and I was reminded how much I love it.

14. Beyonce- Halo
Seriously, fuck all haters, Beyonce is amazing, and this song is undeniably amazing and beautiful, and I think everything she does rules.
