Over the weekend Scottish band We Were Promised Jetpacks played a packed room at the Horseshoe Tavern and supporting Adam Thompson’s heavy accented vocals, tried to destroy their guitars from the second the pre-flight intro ended. Though the audience grew a little bit restless due to the elongated period between opening Toronto band The Coast and the Jetpacks, the wait was worth it and soon the place became a haven for rocking sing along tartan pop music.

The band will be touring their latest EP The Last Place You’ll Look for the rest of the summer down south and overseas, concluding with a show in their hometown of Edinburgh. In an interview with AUX, member Darren Lackie spoke about what’s next for the band, who’s debut album These Four Walls was released last year.

“We’ve been demoing new songs recently,” Lackie said. “We’ve got some sort of dates in mind of when we’re going into the studio… we’re hoping to go in and record in the Fall. Hopefully we can get it out early next year.”

The band are used to moving between releases quickly as their last EP was recorded and released specifically for their North American tour. “We didn’t really have a lot of time,” he said. “Fat Cat, our label sort of just sprung it on us and said they wanted us to do an EP. We had two weeks, which were meant to be our two weeks off before Christmas.

We did it with our sound engineer back home…he’s a good friend of ours so he sort of knew what we were looking for. He knew we wanted to try out something different. The EP is a lot different than the album. It was fun to do. Just sort of going into the studio and working on parts when you don’t know what’s coming next.”

On this tour, when the quartet isn’t playing they’re paying close attention to the World Cup. Even though their home team failed to qualify, Lackie admits they are all huge soccer fans and watch the matches whenever they can. “We were actually watching the World Cup on a iPhone in the van earlier on until the stream cut out.”

After the tournament each member will go back to supporting his Scottish club team, which probably makes Saturday and Sunday afternoons extremely exciting when the games are played. “I support a rubbish Edinburgh team called Hibernian,” he said. “Sean and Adam support our rivals, Hearts. Mike supports a small second division team called Ayr United.”
