Last night Pearl Jam performed at the Optimus Alive festival in Lisbon where lead singer Eddie Vedder, reading in Portuguese from a sheet of paper, told the crowd this was their “last gig” in a long time. Vedder read the statement after the band’s first song of the evening saying, “Thank you for coming to our last show. Not our last ever, but our last in a long time.”

No word was given as to how long they’ll be taking a break for or why. The band, who formed in Seattle in 1990 and received a ton of acclaim for being one of the many bands to emerge from the Pacific Northwest playing alternative rock music, released their ninth studio album entitled Backspacer last year. Prior to the new album’s release, Pearl Jam reissued their groundbreaking debut album Ten, which originally came out in 1991.

Apparently all of the band’s albums will be reissued leading up to their 20th anniversary next year. A movie directed by Cameron Crowe looking back on their career is also reportedly in the works. Crowe’s 1992 film Singles featured music from Pearl Jam, then known as Mookie Blaylock, as well as several other emerging acts from Seattle including Soundgarden and Alice in Chains. The members of Pearl Jam actually played small roles in the film as bandmates of Matt Dillon’s character Cliff Poncier’s band Citizen Dick.
