In an interview for a new high school textbook called The Rax Active Citizen Toolkit, Thom Yorke has said he believes it’s “only a matter of months” before the collapse of the mainstream music business. He also warned young musicians about signing with major labels.

According to the London Evening Standard, Yorke said the collapse of the mainstream music industry would be “no great loss to the world. Only a matter of time — months rather than years — before the music business establishment completely folds,” he added.

The singer’s band Radiohead recorded and made their fame through six albums with EMI, but later split with the label after failing to agree to terms. The band’s 2007 album In Rainbows was released for free or whatever fans thought it was worth in a groundbreaking move, something they’re used to by now.

The textbook itself is due out in the UK next month and was written by Jamie Kelsey. It also features interviews with R&B singer Ms Dynamite and broadcaster Jon Snow and aims to help teenagers become more politically literate. [NME]
