NYC’s Coheed and Cambria is hard to categorize. Their music is an amalgamation of various musical styles creating the band’s distinct sound. Thematically, the band has been revealing a science fiction story line entitled The Armory Wars through the release of each record. The band’s latest record Year of the Black Rainbow is a prequel to the events unfolded in the bands first release, 2002’s Second Stage Turbine Blade.

Charismatic front man Claudio Sanchez speaks about the unraveling of the Armory Wars story. “There’s the idea of the concept that kind of sits behind the record—each record playing a chapter in the story. It’s not something we force down the listeners’ throats. It’s certainly implied and is an option should you want more from the music, but it is not a complete necessity. Lyrically the themes are very universal; I think anybody can understand the general idea of what’s going on in the songs.”

Though there is a cohesive story behind each record, not everything is premeditated. Many aspects of the story are dictated by Sanchez’s personal life. Sanchez continues, “I understand where the record will stand in terms of the part of the overall concept but in terms of the details a lot of the stuff lyrically is influenced by where I am in my life at that moment in time and that will help mold and dictate the fiction.”

You can watch a full interview with Coheed’s Claudio Sanchez along with interviews from Dying Fetus, Ken Mode, and Toronto’s very own Titan tonight at 10 pm on a new episode HARD followed by the HARD music video flow.
