It’s hard to know when MGMT is being genuine and when they’re not. After relentless touring for their debut album Oracular Spectacular the band has become somewhat weary of showing their true colours. Nevertheless there’s an element of peculiarity and intrigue in MGMT that continuously shines through and on the new album Congratulations the virtue is enhanced. Whether they’re hiding behind irony or letting it all hang out it’s hard to say, either way though, the band has successfully demanded the attention of listeners without pandering to the jest of the entertainment spectacle. It seems they’ve realized the opportunity they have as musicians but are determined to minimize the affect of that success on their individuality – at least as much as possible.
