Kittie is best known for their incredibly successful debut album Spit—a record the band released when they were just teenagers. It is 10 years later and the band is still going strong. AUX was given the opportunity to talk to Kittie’s founding members, the incredibly charming Lander sisters Morgan and Mercedes, in a crammed back room of Toronto’s Opera House.

“We’ve actually swayed a lot of our previous critics which is a nice scenario. Honestly, we didn’t really set out to do anything different, but I think it is just the natural evolution of the band,” said Morgan when asked about their latest musical effort In the Black; a record that demonstrates the band’s growth and ability to still create brutally heavy music.

“We took less time to record In the Black than Funeral for Yesterday but it turned out better for some reason. I did my drum tracks in one day,” Mercedes added. “Everything was pretty much done in 3 weeks—whereas Funeral for Yesterday took almost 3 months.”

“I think because it is a lot less complicated, it’s more of what you’re going to get when you see us live,” stated Morgan.

“I find overcomplicating things always makes things sound shitty.”

When Kittie’s debut album Spit was released over 10 years ago, much attention was given to the band. When asked to reflect on that time Morgan laughed and said, “I feel like we now are so far removed from those people that we were when we wrote the album when we were like 14, 15, and 16 years old that it is really hard to identify lyrically, thematically and musically with a lot of the stuff that went on [the record]. “

Though the girls don’t feel that Spit stands up to their current musical standards, they still talk about the record and that time in their lives fondly. “Not many people can say they have something that captures a moment of their 14 year old life,” Mercedes interjected. “We can look back [and say,] ‘Well, this is what we did when I was that old—and it might not be the best thing in the world, and it might not sound very good, but at the end of the day I did it.’”

“We were just enjoying our lives and this crazy opportunity. We never imagined that things would have gone as far as they did. We pressed 8000 copies of our first CD and that’s how many we were going to sell. We thought this was going to be a summer project—and now it is 10 years later we’re still a professional touring band.”

You can watch the full interview with Kittie on this week’s episode of HARD, 10pm  tonight—only on AUX Rogers 107.
