While Nick, Fab, Albert and Nikolai are in the studio laying down new Strokes material, Julian is out on tour supporting his solo album Phrazes for the Young and making new fans everywhere he goes. Last night he stopped by Late Night with Jimmy Fallon to play “River of Breaklights” and in the process demonstrated how far he can push his vocals. He still sounds like Strokes Julian with the classic deep sounding voice one might call Lou Reed-ish, but the impressiveness comes when he stretches and you think his voice will break and it doesn’t.

The track itself wouldn’t feel alone on any past Strokes record, especially the most recent First Impression of Earth. Despite it being one of the weaker songs off his album, Casablancas’ vocal performance certainly made up for it and if those kinds of vocals soar on the new Strokes record, combined with Albert and Fab’s new musical vision, we might be in for a treat.
