From That Thing You Do! to American Idiot

According to Deadline, talks have begun with Playtone partners Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman to turn the musical adaptation of Green Day’s album American Idiot into a feature film.
The musical features songs off American Idiot to tell the story of three small town male characters: one joins the army, another moving to the city and becoming addicted to drugs and the other dealing with the pregnancy of his girlfriend. Directed by Michael Mayer, who also directed the rock musical, Spring Awakening, the musical has little dialogue besides the Green Day songs.
Playtone’s last effort at converting stage to screen was Mamma Mia!, which grossed over $610 million worldwide. There’s a good chance of it looking a bit like this:
