Musician Chris Colohan has featured in multiple hardcore bands including Cursed, Ruination and Left For Dead. Now lead singer in Burning Love alongside members of Toronto band Our Father, Chris continues to explore the possibilities of the genre.

Toronto band Burning Love is composed of ex-members of the now defunct Our Father and hardcore veteran Chris Colohan. You may recognize Colohon from his prior efforts in Ruination, The Swarm, and Cursed. Due to Colohan’s accomplished track record, Burning Love’s audience seems to come with a certain amount of baggage. Colohon elaborates, “The reaction has been really great once everyone figures out that it is not Cursed. I think people at first expect Cursed and things that are more dark and nihilistic. I wanted to use a different part of my head”

Followers of the band’s previous endeavors may be surprised at Burning Love’s approach to their music. Though certain reoccurring themes still remain, Burning Love provides songs that are often a lot more upbeat. “Part of it is having some fun and playing around real bullshit rock and roll clichés. Other than that it is just writing pretty straight forward rippers. We just wanted to write good mid-paced punk songs.”

Though Burning Love’s band member’s approach to song writing has evolved, the band’s DIY ethics have remained intact. “I know for me it just makes me appreciate the work that individuals do,” Colohon continued, “Whether it is people at labels, or people who run venues or record stores, it is always the best when it is in people’s own hands because it is their culture. We just did a tour of the UK and the best shows we had were in anarchist punk squats. It is funny because Cursed seemed like it was gnarly and thrashy but we’d play a shitload of suburbs—and we seem like we’re a little more poppy and rock-like and we play these really crusty punk [venues].”

Burning Love’s full video interview will repeat on Aux’s HARD tonight at 10pm. You can also see Burning Love play at the Wreckroom with Coalesce in Toronto on March 11th.
