From the outsider’s perspective hardcore is a genre full of negativity and violence—Hatebreed singer Jasta challenges this point of view and talked about how hardcore has had a positive affect on his life. AUX TV sat down with Jasta on this week's episode of HARD.

“Tonight, our words are your words and every voice makes a difference!” screamed Hatebreed front-man Jamey Jasta to an adoring audience at the Sound Academy. Hatebreed is well known for their powerful stage show and their positive lyrics. Since 1994, Hatebreed has been working hard to bring hardcore to a larger audience and their effort has been met with much success. Aux was able to sit down with Jasta before their set and chat about Hatebreed’s influential messages and the band’s newest records.

From the outsider’s perspective hardcore is a genre full of negativity and violence—Hatebreed singer Jasta challenges this point of view and talked about how hardcore has had a positive affect on his life. “People are given the opportunity go to shows rather than do something like criminal activity or drugs. For a lot of young people, especially young men ages 13 – 18 what are your options really? Especially for me, I was skipping school and delving into other things that I shouldn’t have—so the hardcore scene was a good outlet for my aggressive energy. I just look at it as a way for people to find something they belong to and feel good about.”

Jasta puts much emphasis on overcoming life’s adversities in his lyrics; a message that has had an important impact on Hatebreed’s fans. “We’ve done signings on our last 3 headline tours and every night I talk to hundreds of people that have our lyrics tattooed on them or have our lyrics printed out on their wall—it feels good. You always want it to be a little more than entertainment. If it could be a little more than headbanging and moshing then you feel that you’re doing something special.”

Recently, Hatebreed has released two records within a very short timeframe—a cover album called For the Lions and the band’s 5th studio album simply titled Hatebreed. Both records exemplify the band’s intense work ethic and accomplished career. “The decision to release two records in one year was an overambitious one, but I think in the long run it is going to turn out to be a good thing. With the covers album we were able to pay respect to all the bands that influenced us. With the self titled record we just wanted to get it out because a lot of the material was ready to go. We figured who knows how long cds are going to be around for and why make the fans wait?”

Hatebreed is currently on tour in Europe. You can see tour dates on the band’s website.
