Our blogger in Vancouver sends us this dispatch from the cultural Olympiad, where she caught up with Kid Koala spinning at CODE Live. Keep checking back for more AUX Olympic music coverage.

It’s balmy and rainy and the first official night of the Olympics. I cruise down Main street, head through eastern Vancouver’s industrial area to Great Northern Way Campus. I’m damp but stoked to see the man himself – Kid Koala.  I weave through warehouses and studio lofts, looking for the venue – it was refreshing to get out of the hustle and swarms of cops that is the Olympics. This CODE live site is among a series of cultural exhibitions that highlight various musical, media and visual artists from around the country. A sort of Olympics for the arts, without the fierce competition.

I’m handed a bingo card at the door and see two giant turntable projected on the wall behind the stage – I know I’m in for some good clean fun. The warehouse is full and even though I showed up alone, I feel like I’m among friends. The crowd seemed much like Kid himself – laid back, happy and not taking themselves too seriously. As Kid Koala ignites the base and rumble room I can’t believe my eyes by how fast Kid Koala’s fingers actually move. More impressively, his thoughtful and calculated skills are as delightful as his humble banter with the crowd. Kid spins old bluesy vocals and beautifully scratched jazz piano with thundering base lines. Kid Koala invokes a feeling of modern nostalgia, presence that is completely fresh yet full of classic style.
