In stores this week is the debut record from Postdata. And though you may not recognize the band name right off the bat, there is a familiar face to be found among the duo of members who make up the band.

Wintersleep’s Paul Murphy counts himself as one of the band members, the other being his brother Michael. Their record came together in a fairly impromptu fashion with the Murphy brothers recording a dozen ideas together, forgoing click tracks and guitar tuners in the first round of the recording process.

Approximately eight months later, the duo reconvened and reacquainted themselves with the initial songs they had essentially written and recorded on the spot. The brothers then brought in microphones and guitar tuners to aid in making some of the tracks more palatable and complete. The end result saw some of the songs with a much fuller sound   while other tracks that they felt didn’t hit the mark were discarded entirely.

The differences between the Postdata record and his work in Wintersleep are numerous, according to Murphy.

“The Postdata record is much more of a folk album, a really stripped down effort and was assembled in a very different way than how we would do a Wintersleep record,” Murphy begins. “The songs were more-less written as we were recording them which is also a  much different process than what Wintersleep would do.

“Postdata obviously lack the band dynamic that Wintersleep has but I think it works, especially with us not having a full band to play with. It’s all part of the experience though and I really cherish that.”

Speaking from Europe where Wintersleep are in the process of mixing their upcoming record, Murphy has over two dozen Postdata shows scheduled throughout Europe starting on January 28 in Antwerpen, Belgium. He confirms that Canadian dates will inevitably follow although none are currently scheduled at this time.

With his brother Mike in the midst of law studies, Murphy doesn’t anticipate Postdata being much more than a one-off project for the time being. In spite of this, he remains very proud of the body of work he accomplished with his brother.

“It was so good to spend time working and hanging out with Mike although I can’t foresee anything else happening anytime soon in relation to Postdata,” he admits.

“Wintersleep is a very busy band and I am getting married before long so I am thinking that it will be pretty darn near impossible to think about making another Postdata record anytime soon.”
