A Brazilian fansite alleges that Avril isn't who she claims to be.

Is Avril Lavigne actually Avril Lavigne? A Brazilian fansite alleges that the Canadian pop performer has been replaced by an imposter that took her place after her family and record label covered up her death.

Standard pop music stuff and all that.

The conspiracy, which Noisey has helpfully sorted out from its original Portuguese, has it that Avril died after a dark depression brought on during the follow-up to her smash debut Let Go. Luckily, Avril hired a doppleganger named Melissa Vandella as a double before her death so everyone just went along pretending the double was actually Avril. Here’s a photo of Classic Avril with Melissa’s name on her hand WHICH IS 110% SUPER DUPER VALID EVIDENCE THAT THIS SHIT IS REAL!

“Clues” about the big ol’ death-then-double switcheroo are said to be nestled into the lyrics of the 2004 album Under My Skin. (Editorial Note: This may also explain the dip in quality too, conspiracy fans.)

Avril’s appearance is also alleged to have changed because of the Melissa factor. Let’s go to the visual aide, shall we?

IT’S LIKE WE’VE BEEN LIVING A SHARED LIE THIS WHOLE TIME!

Anywho, it turns out that the operator of the site doesn’t actually buy into his own theory. According to Noisey, the Dead Avril conspiracy mastermind says his proposal was just an exercise in showing how gullible the internet is. We’d feel sheepish about this, but maybe this guy’s just trying to cover his tracks after getting threatened by Melissa Vandella and the ghost of early 00s Avril.
